The movie “Barbie” was inspired by the famous Mattel doll, dating all the way back to 1959. The main premise of the Barbie movie is: what if Barbie Land co-existed alongside our imperfect universe? The movie’s underlying themes mostly revolve around society’s unattainable and contradictory expectations surrounding women and girls.
“Barbie” has been surrounded by hype and has sparked controversy since its release in July. Although many fans of the flick find it creative and call it a major win in favor of women’s rights, a large portion of the population was very offended by “Barbie” and what it represented.
Some call it self-absorbed, while others call it single-minded. While it’s certainly filled with fantastic style, moral lessons, and intellectual jokes, it earned an eye roll from many of the critics and the public.
Certain viewers are criticizing the fact that the “Barbie” film is just another way to sell merchandise, even though that seems to be what the movie is commenting on. The film by Greta Gerwig starts by introducing us to Barbie Land, where all kinds of Barbies live in their Malibu DreamHouses, go to the beach, and flirt with Kens.
